Protecting pastoral rights, rangelands, and the indigenous way of life of Tamil Nadu's herding communities for a sustainable, climate-resilient future.
A state-level federation representing communities whose traditional way of life and primary livelihood are based on pastoralism and livestock herding — committed to protecting their rights, livelihoods, traditional knowledge, cultural heritage and common grazing lands across Tamil Nadu.
Pastoralists are those whose livestock move outside their village for at least a month annually, and who depend on common resources such as village commons, pastures and water bodies. Despite challenges of shrinking commons, encroachments and urbanization, pastoralism improves soil health through livestock penning, reduces weeds in paddy fields, and converts waste grains into valuable products through duck rearing.
Our Mission: A Tamil Nadu where pastoralists, rangelands and indigenous livestock thrive together — securing pastoral rights, protecting commons, conserving breeds, and strengthening livelihoods through advocacy, research, training and cultural celebration.

From Kidaikattuthal (night penning) that restores soil fertility naturally, to seasonal transhumance along age-old migration routes, these practices have sustained Tamil Nadu's green economy and food systems for millennia.
